On International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024, on 3 December 2024, Nissan has launched a sports documentary on Prime Video in the U.K., U.S.A, and Canada, called 'Dare to Defy'.
The three-part series features two Nissan ambassadors: British Paralympic gold medallist and marathon world record holder Richard Whitehead MBE, alongside LGBTQ+ advocate and broadcaster/DJ turned marathon runner Adele Roberts, with the aim of challenging stereotypes and exploring barriers that minorities face when attempting to participate in sport.
In the series, Whitehead will visit Nissan's Formula E Team around the London E-Prix to understand how the sport embraces inclusion, before providing disabled motorsport fan Abi Evans the chance to drive a specially adapted electric race car.
Meanwhile, Roberts will visit Manchester City Football Club to discuss inclusivity in football with past and present football professionals and the Canal Street Blues, the club’s LGBTQ+ supporters' group.
The series will culminate with an epic finale where Whitehead will travel to Tokyo to learn from the organisers of Nissan Connect, a running race for the visually impaired. He will then work in tandem with Roberts to recruit over 700 people from diverse backgrounds to join them for 'Run to the Future', an inclusive running event with trained support runners to assist disabled participants.
The documentary's goal to drive inclusivity and participation is supported by Nissan's Possibilities Project, a CSR initiative using the brand's technologies, resources, and expertise to create more opportunities for underrepresented communities such as the disabled and LGBTQ+.
