Well-heeled buyers who find the EQS450+ and EQS53 AMG in need of even more power and panache now have the Mercedes-Maybach EQS680 to consider.
The EQS680 SUV, unveiled earlier today at Eureka Griffin Club, is Mercedes-Maybach's first ever electric model. It is based on the EQS SUV, but its refinement and scope for customisation are at an even higher level. Its design is also markedly different from the 'regular' EQS SUV models.
There are several elements that set the EQS680 SUV apart from the EQS SUV. These include the massive black panel grille with pinstripes, Mercedes star on the bonnet, and the subtle 'Maybach' lettering on a chrome strip below it.
The Maybach logos on the rest of the car are easily spotted, though. They appear on the running boards, D-pillars, and tailgate. They appear on the puddle lights as well, and if you still can't tell this is a Maybach, the wheel designs (there are two options) will make it obvious.
Mercedes-Maybach models are known for their two-tone paintwork and filigree pinstripe and this option remains available to owners, who can specify any colour they wish. The factory can even do colour-matching, enabling owners to have the exact hue of their choosing.
Interestingly, however, this is not available to clients who opt for the EQS680 SUV Night Series, which sees the model fitted with even more luxurious features (more on this later).
The Night Series, which is solely available in one of three paintwork options: Manufaktur opalite bright white (as seen in these photos), obsidian black, and the two-tone obsidian black/mojave silver. Mercedes-Benz says that those who opt for the Night Series can't specify any other paint hue for the car.
Specifying the Night Series also adds dark chrome accents to the EQS680 SUV, along with 21-inch wheels that feature the Maybach motif. Night Series also means the model comes with the First-Class Rear, an even more opulent take on the rear passenger compartment.
With the First-Class Rear, the centre console extends all the way to the back, allowing each rear occupant to have their own space. The seats here can be reclined and have their leg rests extended for a more relaxed experience, just like a first-class seat on an airplane. Without Night Series, the EQS680 SUV has a regular rear bench, making it a five-seater.
For added convenience, the EQS680 SUV features doors that automatically open and close. When the driver approaches the locked vehicle, the doors open when he or she is about 1.5 metres away from the car and close the moment the brake pedal is depressed. This feature can also be activated and/or disabled via the MBUX infotainment system.
Standard equipment includes the Burmester 4D Surround Sound system featuring Dolby Atmos. The setup features numerous components that include two 3D speakers in the headliner and two exciters in each seat to help deliver a four-dimensional listening experience.
Further improving this is the upgraded sound insulation for the cabin, which sees the encapsulation of the electric drivetrains, drive units that have been doubly decoupled with rubber mounts, and special acoustic foams in selected body shell profiles are used to reduce noise intrusion.
Complementing these is the addition of the Maybach drive programme, which replaces the Comfort setting in the regular EQS. It helps deliver maximum cushiness for rear occupants by reducing body movements under the backseats.
When not cosseting passengers, the EQS680 SUV has plenty of performance to offer. Its two electric motors deliver 649bhp (484kW) and 955Nm of torque, which can propel the big SUV from zero to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. That is plenty quick for something weighing well over two tonnes.
Mercedes claims a driving range of between 533km and 635km, although this will vary depending on driving styles and traffic conditions. The EQS680 SUV is priced from $976,888, while the EQS680 SUV Night Series starts from $1,130,888. Both figures are inclusive of COE.
