Bentley has revealed three special Bentaygas, all designed to celebrate the famous 'Bentley Girls' Mary Petre Bruce, Dorothy Paget, and Diana Barnato Walker and to mark International Women's Day (IWD).
The cars were commissioned by Bentley's own bespoke designers, Emma Carruthers and Georgia Gough, who were inspired by the women that held defining roles in Bentley's 105-year history.
The Mary Petre Bruce Bentayga Azure features a Parson Green Pearlescent finish and a chequered flag D pillar badge reflecting the sporting minimalism of the Bentley 4.5-Litre
The first special Bentley Bentayga is inspired by Mary Petre Bruce, who piloted a 4.5-Litre Bentley at Montlhery, France for 24 hours on 6 June 1929, to capture the world record for single-handed driving, averaging speeds of more than 143km/h. Mary is said to had never driven a Bentley until the day of the record attempt and had to borrow cushions from the official timekeepers so she could reach the pedals. Despite fog, cold and treacherous track conditions she covered more than 3,480km in the record attempt.
The Mary Petre Bruce Bentayga Azure features Parson Green Pearlescent Paint over matching heritage hide, both a direct connection to her 4.5-Litre. The interior of the car, meanwhile, features 24-karat gold organ stops, aligning with her winning mentality and lavish lifestyle. The Mary Petre Bruce Bentayga Azure also sports vertical fluted quilting seat uppers and doorcards as well as Mother of Pearl Marquetry reading 'YV 7263' - the number plate of the 4.5-Litre.
The Dorothy Paget Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Mulliner features a solid Blower Green exterior and a minimal split interior hide of Cumbrian and Blower Green - colour-matched to the Team Car No.2 Blower Bentley
The second bespoke Bentley Bentayga takes inspiration from Dorothy Paget, who played a vital role in the creation of the 4½ Litre Supercharged, commonly known as the Blower Bentley. Paget is said to have found an interest in motor racing after visiting Brooklands, where she took driving lessons from Bentley Boy and racing driver Sir Tim Birkin.
And when Sir Tim Birkin had become obsessed with driving more performance from the Bentley 4.5-Litre and was convinced that Amherst Villiers' supercharger was the way to do it despite the opposition of W.O. Bentley himself, it was Dorothy Paget who sponsored a racing team of supercharged Blowers.
The Dorothy Paget Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Mulliner (read more about the Bentley Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Mulliner here) thus features solid Blower Green Exterior paint. In its cabin, a minimal colour split features, with interior hide of Cumbrian and Blower Green - colour-matched to the Team Car No.2 which Birkin himself piloted at Le Mans in 1930. The Dorothy Paget Bentayga Extended Wheelbase Mulliner also features Nickel Painted Self Levelling Wheel Accent Bezels and Painted Nickel Veneer Carriers to the interior - both a reference to the Blower's radiator.
The Smoke Green exterior and the interior hide split of green and saddle of the Diana Barnato Bentley Bentayga S takes inspiration from the Spitfire aircraft
The final Bentley Girl, Diana Barnato, is said to have inherited her father's (three-time Le Mans winner Woolf Barnato) courageous spirit, becoming an accomplished horsewoman and keen motorist, driving a Dove Grey Bentley 4¼ Litre Park Ward saloon.
But here more significant achievements were done in the air. Barnato flew solo at the Brooklands Flying Club in 1938 after only six hours of instruction and joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941, delivering aircraft from the factories to front-line squadrons - a difficult task, as she had to navigate herself without any ground contact, with radio frequencies reserved for the frontline squadrons. She is said to have delivered 260 Spitfires and numerous other aircraft to their squadrons by the end of the war.
The Diana Barnato Bentley Bentayga S (read more about the Bentley Bentayga S here) takes inspiration from Barnato favourite aircraft - the Spitfire - and so features a Smoke Green exterior and the interior hide split of green and saddle, referencing the Spitfire Mk.9's cockpit. Additionally, the car features a bespoke D Pillar badge with the Spitfire emblem and Signal Yellow accents replicating the colour of the wing's leading edge.
