Bentley Continental GT Speed unveiled in Singapore

The Continental GT Speed, Bentley's all-new, range-topping grand tourer, is now in Singapore. Unveiled at W Residences' Marina View Gallery earlier today, the fourth-generation Continental GT Speed is also the first to be equipped with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Apart from further boosting performance, this new powertrain also enables the two-door to travel on electric power alone. Previously, the Continental GT Speed was powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12.
Style-wise, the new Continental GT Speed has the same silhouette as its predecessor. Those trademark muscular rear haunches, inspired by the R-Type Continental, are still present. Designers, however, have done away with the twin headlamps, making this model the first mainstream Bentley to have single head lights since the 1950s.
Said head lights come with an 'eyebrow' with a crystal cut diamond effect. The matrix LEDs have 120 separate LEDs that are digitally controlled to offer a better transition between lit and unlit areas. Bentley says the new Continental GT is inspired by a 'tiger at rest'. The goal was to make the grand tourer look muscular yet relaxed, with a 'determined face'.
The car's rear features an aerodynamically shaped boot lid that eschews the need for a retractable spoiler, while the tail-lamps have wider graphics that stretch towards the boot lid. These have a three-dimensional diamond pattern that when illuminated, supposedly create the visual effect of molten lava.
Inside, the cockpit blends traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Sculptured quilting and fading perforations are just some of the techniques used by designers to create a 'cocooning' atmosphere, in conjunction with the optional 'Wellness' seating that helps reduce fatigue.
Clients can personalise the interior to their heart's content with help from Mulliner, Bentley's bespoke division. Specifying unique hues and combinations for the leather upholstery, along with specific types of stitching, for instance, are just the starting points for clients to express themselves.
Indeed, Continental GT Speed customers can even choose between three audio systems. There's a 'Standard' 650-watt system with 10 speakers, a Bang & Olufsen 1,500-watt system with 16 speakers, and a 2,200-watt Naim system with 18 speakers and eight sound modes.
All this is complemented by a mood lighting system with 30 colours, which Bentley says highlights the shapes of the seats and doors to further enhance the cocooning effect of the interior's design.
The new Continental GT Speed is the fastest and most powerful one Bentley has ever produced, and this is down to its new plug-in hybrid powertrain. Keen drivers will be pleased to know that the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre cross-plane V8 is still present and that its vocals are not synthesised.
By itself, the V8 delivers 592bhp (600PS) and 800Nm of torque. However, it is paired to an electric motor producing a 187bhp (190PS) and 450Nm of torque. However, since each one produces peak power at different speeds, the total output is not derived by simply adding these figures together.
Instead, the key is combined output, and for the Continental GT Speed, this is 771bhp and 1,000Nm of torque. Responsible for sending these to all four wheels is an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. At full tilt, the grand tourer crushes the century sprint in 3.2 seconds. Top speed is 335km/h.
At the same time, when the 25.9kWh battery that powers the electric motor is fully charged, it also allows the driver to travel up to 80km on electric power alone. Should the owner decide to plug the car in to charge, an 11kW charger will top-up the battery in 2.75 hours or 165 minutes.
To harness this power, the new Continental GT features Bentley Performance Active Chassis. Apart from all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and an electronic limited-slip differential, the grand tourer also has a dual-valve damper system and dual-chamber air springs.
The latter enables more force to be spread between the softer and harder settings, while the ECU for the dampers has full control over independent compression and rebound damping, thereby offering a better balance between sportiness and comfort.
Official Bentley agent Wearnes Automotive says it has taken "a handful" of orders for the car, which starts from $1,538,000 without COE, options or insurance. When fully kitted-out with options, the dealer says the car will cost "around $1.9 million" before COE.
