Ford starts production of the Explorer in Germany

Ford has started mass production of the all-electric Ford Explorer at its dedicated electric vehicle plant in Cologne, Germany.
Production of the new Explorer at the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Centre comes after the site received an investment to ready the historic location for production of a new generation of electric passenger vehicles for Europe.
The site is said to house a host of self-learning machines and more than 600 new robots that execute welding, cutting, dusting, painting and fusing tasks. All these robots are additionally controlled via a new control centre monitors the entire assembly process in real time.
Ford states that the Cologne Electric Vehicle Centre is one of its most efficient vehicle assembly plants globally. The plant is working towards implementing a carbon neutrality pathway, with all electricity obtained from 100% certified renewable sources and all its natural gas needs met with biomethane.
Ford Motor Company is targeting carbon neutrality across its European production footprint of facilities, logistics and direct suppliers by 2035. The plant will additionally assemble a second electric sports crossover that is yet to be revealed later in 2024.
