PWRS: A million-dollar driving opportunity not to be missed

Are you interested in fast cars? If you are, then you probably are also a fan of Porsche, if I may presume. Well, the Porsche World Road Show is definitely an event that you will enjoy.
Simply put, the Porsche World Road Show (PWRS) is a 'touring' performance driving event. Somewhat like a circus troupe, a team of certified international Porsche instructors travel around the world with a fleet of Porsche's latest exciting sports cars to offer an unforgettable experience to all participants.
Expectedly, for an event of such a scale, there is a noteworthy cost to participate - this year's PWRS, held in Malaysia, costs between RM2,888 (SGD$830) and RM3,888 (SGD$1,118). But yes, after experiencing it, I'm here to tell you that you should grab the opportunity if you were presented with it, despite the hefty cost.
You'll get to drive the Porsche of your dreams
Before you protest about paying four-digit sums just for a day out with Porsche cars, hear me out. At PWRS, the stable of cars that you will get to experience is not only frequently updated, but also very exquisite - these include cars that cost well upwards of a million dollars in Singapore.
A total of 23 cars were present at PWRS Malaysia 2024, and they include the heart-throbbing 911 GT3 RS, 718 GT4 RS, 718 Spyder RS, 911 Turbo S, Taycan Turbo S and many others. Last year's PWRS in Singapore also had an impressive roster of cars. However, as it was the local debut of the latest 911 (992) GT3 RS, the car wasn't available for participants to experience just yet.
I don't know about you, but the 911 GT3 RS has been a dream car of mine since the 997 generation that was introduced back in 2006. And prior to PWRS, without over a million dollars in my bank account, I can't imagine myself ever getting behind the wheel of one, much less getting to savour its dynamic prowess in its entirety on a racetrack like Sepang Circuit.
Pedal to the metal in a safe and controlled environment
Yes, Sepang Circuit! While PWRS Singapore was held at Changi Exhibition Centre with a track demarcated with cones on a repurposed parking area, this year's iteration was held in Malaysia's Sepang Circuit, a former F1 circuit.
The cars at PWRS were all high-powered, featuring cars like the Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo putting out close to 1,000bhp. Meanwhile the track-oriented 911 GT3 RS and 718 GT4 RS doesn't just pack plenty of power, but also sticky tyres, state-of-the-art suspension, carbon ceramic brakes, and substantial aerodynamic packages, to offer extreme performance.
Without an adequate environment, there's no way for one to have a proper experience of what cars like these are capable of. And there's no better place than an actual, challenging circuit with sufficient run-off areas and safety measures to let you soak in the essence of these pure sports cars without putting yourself in unnecessary risk.
Learn from world-class race drivers
The opportunity to drive this fleet of dream cars on a racetrack is pretty much all you need for an exhilarating day out. But PWRS isn't about mindless driving enjoyment - it is an opportunity for you to experience what Porsche's sports cars are capable of.
And in order to appreciate these machines, you would have to know what you are doing behind the wheel. That is why Porsche has a crew of world-class instructors, who are also professional race drivers, to guide the participants along.
This isn't the type of event where you drive slow parade laps on a track, or around the city streets to pose for photos. At PWRS, the programme has been designed to allow you to experience the cutting-edge performance of the cars, while learning from the instructors and improve your driving skills at the same time.
PWRS consists of five main segments and our first activity was acceleration and braking. We got to launch the Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, which completed the century sprint in just 2.5 seconds, and then a hard brake to a dead stop in a brief moment thanks to the carbon ceramic brakes. It might sound simple, but getting to experience such brutal acceleration was a definite eye-opener!
Next up was the slalom course, a staple in performance driving events. The slalom requires finesse in steering and accelerator control in order to manoeuvre the car through the course and dodge the cones in quick succession - it is hence the perfect activity to experience a car's stability and agility. With the instructor's demonstration and guidance, we were able to experience what the 718 Spyder RS was capable of.
There was also an off-roading segment, which saw us driving Porsche Cayennes through a short off-road course to experience what the car can do - it isn't just a showy luxury SUV!
The highlight of the event, in my opinion, was the handling segment where we got to drive cars such as the 911 GT3 RS, 718 GT4 RS, 911 Turbo S, Taycan Turbo and many others. In this segment, participants got to drive around the track (sans the main straight) in a convoy lead by the instructor, who will demonstrate the lines and braking points. With the vast yet challenging track at our disposal, we were able to drive the cars as they were intended - the extended amount of time spent driving the car on the track allows one to get an intimate understanding of Porsche's sports cars.
First-hand experience what a race car driver is capable of
The final activity at PWRS Malaysia was a taxi ride with the instructor behind the wheel. It is only when you find yourself in the passenger seat, with an actual professional race car driver, that you'll start to realise their absolute ability to control a car.
We had to draw lots to determine the car that we would be driven in, and by some stroke of luck, my taxi ride experience turned out to be the 911 GT3 RS! While I was expecting a normal fast lap, the instructor threw the car into a slide right at the first turn, with the tyres smoking as the we exited the second one. Being a rear-engined sports car with massive tyres and lots of mechanical grip, one could only imagine the skill needed to control the car as such.
And this is yet another experience PWRS offers that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.
A fun-filled experience that you won't want to miss
PWRS allowed us to experience Porsche's cars to the fullest, improve our driving skills, and most importantly it was enjoyable from start to finish. If you still need more convincing, just think of it this way - with a cost of around $1,000, you'll get to drive multiple cars that costs over a million dollars, and under the guidance of professional instructors and at an iconic racetrack, no less.
So, if you ever find yourself staring down at an opportunity to attend PWRS, just say yes.
