ICA puts more automation in place to handle border traffic, but don't expect a congestion-free crossing

If you're thinking of braving the border crossing tomorrow, we have some great news: the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has announced that it has boosted the number of automated lanes in the bus halls at the Woodlands Checkpoint, and reconfigured the bus and car counters at both the Woodlands and Tuas Checkpoints to automate immigration clearance for lone drivers, all in anticipation of increased cross-border traffic come 1 April 2022.
These preperations come following an announcement made on 24 March 2022, revealing that the borders were to open to fully vaccinated travelers making the trip via private vehicles such as cars and motorcycles. Prior to this announcement, those that had valid reasons to travel across the border were only able to do so via buses, with a limit of 4,000 individuals daily enforced.
Those travelling across the border via bus or travelling alone via cars can look forward to more automated clearance at the border crossing The ICA has also announced that it and its officers, alongside the relevant checkpoint agencies have done drills and exercises to familiarise themselves with the workflow and processes in anticipation of reopening of the border, which should go towards smoother traffic once the border opens.
Nonetheless, it continues to urge the public to avoid any non-essential travel, especially during peak hours, in lieu of the expected congestion at both checkpoints.
If you're thinking of making the trip across the border come April, don't forget to ensure that your fuel tank is at least three-quarters full if you're driving towards Malaysia with a Singapore-registered car.
And if you're making your way into Singapore in a foreign-registered vehicle, be sure to ensure that you have a valid VEP and Autopass card to minimise any difficulties at the crossing.
