Audi A5 gets new muscular design

Audi has revealed a new A5, and interestingly, it's also set to take the place of the outgoing Audi A4.
That's right. Going forward, Audi's models which make use of even numbers will be exclusively all-electric cars, while those with odd numbers will make use of combustion engines.
Back to the A5. This new model now sits upon the firm's PPC platform (that is, short for Premium Platform Combustion). Wrapped around this platform is a new muscular yet clean design, with the Sedan variant getting a compact greenhouse that stretches to the rear in a sweeping arc via a shallow rear window in a coupe-like manner, an effect made greater via a short tailgate with a striking spoiler lip.
An Avant is also being offered at launch, which gets a taut roofline that merges into a seamlessly integrated roof spoiler that spans a sporty, flat rear window.
At the front, the Audi A5 now gets a wide and flatter Singleframe grille with a three-dimensional honeycomb structure. There are also slim head lights, and a hood that sits flush to the front of the car, but you’re most likely enticed by the strong blisters that protrude from the shoulder area at the front and rear wheels - a nod to the Audi Ur quattro.
In the cabin, that new PPC platform means the Audi A5 is now able to offer a new digital experience based on the 1.2 version of the firm's E3 electronic architecture.
This is all housed within a new free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display that comprises the 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. Ahead of the front passenger, meanwhile, is a new 10.9-inch MMI front passenger display, integrated into the dashboard.
Petrol-powered variants of the new Audi A5 now include an entry-level 2.0-litre engine that offers a total of 148bhp. This engine will only be offered with front-wheel drive. This engine is also available in a 201bhp state-of-tune and can be had with quattro ultra (which sends power to the rear wheels only when necessary for greater fuel economy). This engine also makes use of a variable geometry turbocharger.
Audi is also offering a S5 at launch, powered by a 362bhp 3.0-litre V6 engine, also paired to a variable geometry turbocharger and getting mild hybrid technology. Audi states that the S tronic dual-clutch transmission in this S5 has also been revised to it places less weight on the car's front axle for improved agility.
